Which grade do you need?

The safest answer is printed in your bike's owner's manual. The first number (10W, 20W) shows how easily the oil flows when cold; the last (30, 40, 50) shows how thick it stays when the engine is hot.

10W-30
SAE hot-viscosity class 30, low-temperature class 10W. Use when the manual permits 10W-30 and the API/JASO standard matches.
10W-40
SAE hot-viscosity class 40, low-temperature class 10W. Matching grade alone does not confirm motorcycle or scooter compatibility.
20W-50
SAE hot-viscosity class 50. Hot weather or high mileage alone does not justify replacing a grade-30 or grade-40 recommendation.
